What is Microsoft Copilot (Excel)?

This is the same Microsoft 365 Copilot license, seen from the spreadsheet: no separate purchase, no separate app. What makes Excel different from Word or Outlook is Agent Mode, which plans and builds a multi-step workbook, formulas, PivotTables and charts, then checks its own work, plus Copilot's ability to write and run Python for analysis you would otherwise hand to a data analyst. Files must live in OneDrive or SharePoint. Best first test: give it a messy export and ask for a summary table.

Three things Microsoft Copilot (Excel) does best

1. Builds a whole workbook step by step

   Agent Mode takes a plain-English goal, plans the steps, then writes formulas, PivotTables and charts across sheets and reviews its output before handing it back. It is generally available in Excel on the web, Windows and Mac, but only for workbooks saved to OneDrive or SharePoint.

2. Runs Python analysis without installing anything

   Copilot can switch into advanced analysis and generate Python that runs in Microsoft's cloud, using pandas and Matplotlib for regressions, forecasts and charts, then place refreshable results back in the sheet. You never install Python, and you can read the generated code before trusting the numbers.

3. Explains and fixes formulas you inherited

   Ask what a nested formula does, why it returns an error, or for a formula that solves a described problem, and Copilot answers in the grid. Since April 2026 this in-app help requires a paid Copilot license; unlicensed Microsoft 365 users only get the separate web-based Copilot Chat.
