What is Runway?

What separates it from most text-to-video tools is that it also edits footage you already shot: Aleph works on an input clip to add, remove or transform objects, change the lighting, or generate a different angle of the same scene. That fits into post-production instead of replacing it. Gen-4.5 handles generation from scratch, and there is an API for teams wiring it into a pipeline. Budget carefully — the free plan is 125 one-time credits, not a monthly refill, and video consumes them quickly.

Three things Runway does best

1. Edit real footage, not just generate it

   Aleph takes video you upload and applies a described change in context: removing an object, altering the environment or lighting, restyling the shot, or producing an angle you never filmed. It keeps the rest of the scene intact, which makes it usable inside an existing edit.

2. Credits run out faster than you expect

   Standard includes 625 credits a month, Pro 2,250 and Max 9,500, while the free plan gives 125 credits once rather than monthly. A few seconds of generated video consumes a meaningful share, so anyone testing seriously tends to reach a paid plan within days.

3. Put a real performance onto a character

   Act-Two needs two inputs, a driving performance video and a reference character, and transfers head, face, body and hand movement onto that character. Runway Characters goes the other way, turning a single reference image into a conversational video agent with lip-sync and head motion.
